The RUP™ Plug-In for operations and application surveillance management
describes how the concept of application surveillance can be included in the
software development process -- namely through the IBM® Rational Unified
Process™. It is designed to increase application visibility and usability
for the support and operations team. The end result is cost-effective management
of the application during its lifetime, and minimal application downtime.
One of the advantages of a shift from a waterfall software development process to an iterative development process is removing "walls" between the people gathering the requirements, the individuals doing the analysis and design of the application, the developers coding and the testers verifying the application. However, in many organizations there is still a last "wall" between the development team and the support and operations team.
The development team is focused on delivering usable, high-quality software to the user community on time and on budget. One of the common problems is to solely focus on the "primary users" of the application and to forget how important the support and operations team is for achieving the ROI objectives set for the application.
The support and operations team is focused on being cost-effective and ensuring that the application delivered by the development team stays usable. The support and operations team follows its own process framework.
The gap existing between those two teams often results in very high costs for the IT service organization in order to offer an acceptable service level for the application; a situation that will eventually impact both the users and the corporate sponsor of the application.
