Host Pat Flanders interviews the IBM Software Services for WebSphere consulting team's senior IT architect Brian Petrini. They continue the discussions of the past few weeks on Business Process Management (BPM) with a focus on WebSphere Process Server, the process behind BPM. Their discussion covers the following topics:

  • Brian's approach to a WebSphere Process Server engagements, especially when relying on an existing business model from WebSphere Business Modeler.

  • The most important issues to keep in mind when integrating existing applications to implement a business process.

  • The specifics of implementing an enterprise information systems (EIS) integration service.

  • How to separate business logic and data from EIS logic and data, and how doing so helps with other implementation life-cycle concerns.

On the "Did you say Mainframe?!" segment, also in Episode 4, Part 1, Dave Rhoderick and Steve Wood discuss building Web services on the mainframe with WebSphere Developer for z/OS and Service Flow Modeler, covering such topics as:

  • The importance of considering the business requirements when designing an SOA and the developer skills involved with this type of solution design.

  • CICS applications' ability to reduce the cost and risk of new SOA solutions.

  • What can make the reuse of CICS assets more effective and how CICS service flow differs from WebSphere Process Server.

  • The basics on Service Flow Modeler and how customers can obtain it.

Brian Petrini is a Senior IT Architect on the IBM Software Services for WebSphere consulting team. He takes part in the Focused Technology practice for IBM WebSphere Business Integration.


Kevin Bowkett is Software Engineer working within the LANDP development group and has a good foundation in Linux, Windows, and OS/2 operating systems. Over the last year Kevin has led the LANDP group to deliver LANDP for Linux to the market place. Kevin is also a IBM Certified Solutions Expert for DB2 Application Development. Steve Wood is currently on the CICS development team in Hursley, England. As a product line manager, he is responsible for definition, communication, and execution of the strategy for CICS Transaction Server. Steve has over 10 years of experience as a software developer, specializing in communications protocols. He was instrumental in introducing TCP/IP implementation into CICS and co-invented the CICS Web support. In addition, he has WebSphere Business Integration expertise, having previously held IT architect and B2B marketing manager positions.


Don Ferguson, Ph.D, was one of 55 IBM Fellows, the highest technical position in the IBM engineering community of 200,000 technical professionals. Don was the Chief Architect and Technical Lead for the IBM Software Group family of products, which includes DB2®, Lotus®, Rational, Tivoli®, and WebSphere. Dr. Ferguson is no longer an employee of IBM.
