This podcast provides a high level overview of how to improve resource utilization. Host Pat Flanders starts off by discussing with Billy Newport on how customers can improve their IT performance and scalability through:

  • The new features of the IBM WebSphere Extended Deployment software product, including the on demand router and the Application Placement Controller.
  • Some of the programming model enhancements in WebSphere Extended Deployment, such as Partitioning Facility and ObjectGrid.

On the MarketWatch segment, David Backus takes a realistic view of the market and discusses with Phillip Parrish what SAP customers should consider when looking at middleware solutions.

On the Did you say Mainframe?! segment, Dave Rhoderick provides:

  • An overview of the mainframe, to help listeners understand the role of mainframe in today's IT environment.
  • An insight into how to create a competitive edge while at the same time decreasing the risk of the IT system and keeping a tight lid on costs.

Billy Newport is a Senior Technical Staff Member working on WebSphere Extended Deployment distributed caching technology (ObjectGrid) and WebSphere high availability. Besides his current activities, he helped add advanced APIs like the WorkManager APIs (JSR 236/237), and worked on the staff plugin architecture of WebSphere Process Server. Prior to IBM, he worked as an independent consultant at a variety of companies in investment banking, telcos, publishing, and yellow pages in over 10 countries.


Phillip Parrish is a Software Technical Architect with the IBM Software Group. He is regarded as a leader on the topic of SAP NetWeaver. He has consulted with 200+ accounts worldwide in every industry segment mapping business requirements to solutions: people, process, and information technology. Experience of note includes Software IT Architect at IBM, Chief Architect at American Airlines, Technical Architect of The SABRE Group, and Senior Engineer at Accenture. His accomplishments have been recognized by the IT industry, trade journals, executive management, and as a speaker at internal and external IT conferences.
