The authors begin with an overview of IBM's mobile solutions, delve into the details of DB2 Everyplace, and then guide you through the necessary steps to actually create and execute a project using DB2 Everyplace.
Introduction
Mobile business is a fast emerging market with solutions needed in almost all areas you can think of: finance, insurance, service technician solutions, sales force automation, health care, and subscriber services for mobile devices, just to name a few. Information from e-mail systems, calenders, databases and other data sources is needed on mobile devices for review, update, and processing.
DB2 Everyplace is a small footprint database solution, designed for pervasive devices such as PDAs, which will meet these business requirements.
In 2002, Walter Mayer and Joachim Stumpf published a developerWorks article entitled "How to Set up and Execute a Mobile Project with DB2 Everyplace" that described IBM mobile solutions, introduced DB2 Everyplace V7.2, and presented a framework for how mobile projects involving DB2 Everyplace should be planned and executed.
However, technology evolves fast. Since the time the paper was published, DB2 Everyplace V8.1 was released, and just recently DB2 Everyplace V8.2 was made available, with major changes in the main processes of synchronization and replication, as well as many new features. It is our intention to leverage the content of the original article, bringing the information to the current state-of-the-art, yet keeping it at least as useful as the original article.
The original article included three topics: IBM mobile solutions offerings, DB2 Everyplace, and planning and executing a mobile project with DB2 Everyplace. Each of these topics includes a number of vital issues, and each answers distinctly different questions:
- Which are the mobile technologies I should use?
- How does DB2 Everyplace V8 work and what is it able to do in detail?
- How do I establish and execute a project plan for a mobile project using DB2 Everyplace?
To better address these three different goals, we decided to split the content of the original publication into three articles, each addressing one of the above questions. Thus we can also fulfill the last requirement of an article; that is, being short and easy to use by addressing a very specific information area.
Part 1: Overview of IBM mobile solutions
Part 1 introduces the IBM mobile solution offerings. It is intended for people who are new to the field of pervasive computing and who do not know yet which of the IBM mobile technologies is appropriate for solving their mobile business needs. The goal is to help you select the right mobile technology.
Part 2: DB2 Everyplace details
Part 2 is intended for readers who have decided that they need a relational data synchronization solution, and now need to understand how DB2 Everyplace works and what can be done with it. This article covers all aspects of running the solution afterwards. You will also find this article useful if you are considering migration from DB2 Everyplace V7 to V8.
Part 3: Project plan
Designed for those who are new to mobile projects in general and mobile projects with DB2 Everyplace in particular, this article guides you through the essential steps in running such a project successfully.
You will find new information that was not part of the original article, including crash recovery and Cloudscape and .NET integration. We hope you find the new articles useful for your work.
